Lewiston Morning Tribune Sunday, September 17, 1922 Edward Nelson Thyfault Dead Operation Fails to Save Wreck Victim. C. Henry Arraigned Pullman Boy Who Drove Car Coming Down Hill, Upon Manslaughter Charge. Ed Thyfault of Genesee, who was operated on at St. Joseph hospital Saturday morning for abdominal injuries received when his car rolled off the Lewiston hill grade following collision Friday night, died yesterday morning. Mr. Thyfault rallied from the operation satisfactorily, and during the day hope was held out for his recovery, but a decline set in at midnight, and death came at 6:45, the shock from the crushing of the body being too great to be withstood. Clarence C. Henry, 18 year old son of W. D. Henry of Pullman, was last night brought to Lewiston by Deputy Sheriff Charles Monroe, having been arrested at Pullman yesterday with the assistance of Sheriff William Cole of Whitman county. Drove Descending Car. It was Clarence Henry that drove the car descending the hill Friday night, and as a result of the death of Mr. Thyfault he was arraigned before Probate Judge C. A. Woe__en upon a charge of manslaughter and remanded to the custody of the sheriff under a $10,000 bond. The car and the driver's license noted in earlier reports belonged to a brother of the boy under arrest, W. D. Henry Jr. Investigation by Sheriff George W. Welker of Nez Perce county showed that Mr. Thyfault was on the right side of the road, and that the car coming down the hill was past the center of the road, with the result that it struck the front fender of the Thyfault car bending the steering gear so that it deflected off the road entirely out of control. The rear wheel of the Henry car was smashed. Mrs. Thyfault Gains. Mrs. Thyfault, who suffered severe cuts about the head, still improves, and one of her children, still in the hospital, is not regarded as seriously hurt. Two other children in the car at the time of the wreck were dismissed from the hospital Saturday morning. Mrs. Bershaw of Clarkston, another passenger, was unscarred. Harry Bushman of Uniontown and Ed Gesellschen of Lewiston brought the party to the hospital, their attention having been attracted as they came down the hill. Mr. Gesellschen carried Mr. Thyfault up the hill and placed him in the Gesellschen car with two of the children. Mr. Bushman carried Mrs. Thyfault and the other child. Mr. Thyfault came to Lewiston seven years ago from Plainville, Kansas, and was then a student at the Lewiston business college. Immediately after his graduation from this institution, he went to work as a foreman for the Indian Cache Ranch, and until a year ago retained that position. At that time he purchased a farm near Genesee where he has since resided. Last fall he married Mrs. Carrie Miller [Mueller], a daughter of Peter J. Konen, one of the prominent farmers of the Genesee district. His family in Kansas. Mrs. Thyfault and the Miller children injured in the accident survive. Mr. Thyfault was 36 years old. Messages have been received that M. N. Thyfault, the father, and a brother are enroute from Plainville to take charge of the body which it is thought will be shipped there for burial, and that Mr. Konen, who had been visiting in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, is coming to Lewiston because of the tragedy.

Thyfault, who died as the result of an auto accident on the Lewiston Hill last week, arrived in this city yesterday from Plainville, Kansas. He was accompanied by his daughter. Definite arrangements have not been arranged for the funeral, but Saturday has been named as a tentative date. |
