Lewiston Morning Tribune Sunday, October 15, 1939 Pioneer Woman Is Taken At Spokane Mrs. Hannah Matilda Underwood Taplin, 81, a resident of Lewiston since the early '60s until one year ago when she moved to Spokane, died at Spokane at 6:45 a.m. yesterday of heart disease, superinduced by a paralytic stroke suffered last April. A native of Clinton county, New York, born July 16, 1858, the daughter of Shovel and Caroline Giles, among the early settlers in Oregon territory, in 1883 she married George W. Underwood, who came to Lewiston in 1861. He died in November, 1923. She then married J. Frank Taplin, who since died. When Mrs. Taplin came to Lewiston the town consisted of a few lean-to shacks and a frame building or two. She lived to see the city of her adoption grow to commercial importance. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Ora Lydon, 628 Tenth street; her brother, William Giles, Union, Ore.; four grandchildren, Bruce Lydon and Mrs. Henry Yackley, both of Lewiston; James Lydon and Mrs. Ray Houchens, both of Spokane, and five great-grandchildren, Margaret Yackley, Marie Yackley, Jimmy Yackley, Howard Yackley, all of Lewiston, and Barbara Lee Houchens, Spokane. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 from the Vassar-Rawls chapel. Burial will be in the family plot in Normal Hill cemetery. |
