Lewiston Morning Tribune Friday, May 21, 1937 Rev. J. H. Spence Called To Reward Retired Minister and Veteran Street Department Employee Is Summoned Following Pneumonia Attack. The Rev. James H. Spence, 81, retired minister of the Baptist church and a veteran employee of the municipal street department, died at St. Joseph's hospital yesterday morning of pneumonia after a brief illness. He was struck by an automobile last December and never fully recovered from his injuries. A native of Virginia, he came west 30 years ago and shortly after located at Lewiston. He held a pastorate in Ohio prior to coming here. When he was 25 years old he served the church in Egypt for six years and was among the best posted men on the Palestine in the northwest. He spoke four languages fluently and often gave lectures. He was active in Townsend club circles. Mr. Spence, shortly after the World war gave over part of his time to the welfare of the needy and his benefactions were many. At one time he furnished paint free to any person unable to improve his home. Funeral to Be Wednesday. He is survived by his widow, Christine Spence; two daughers, Mrs. Ida Druffell, Newport, Ky., and Mrs. Lucy Jones, Dayton, Ohio; and two step-sons, Frank Speno, Asotin, and Louis Speno, Spokane. The body is at the Vassar-Rawls chapel. Funeral services will be held Wednesday following the arrival of his daughter from Kentucky. |
