Lewiston Morning Tribune Saturday, August 22, 1936 Ill Health Causes Suicide With Rope William Smith, 73, Found Hanging In Shack on B Street; Came Here 44 Years Ago and Was Widely Known. Despondency caused by continued ill health was apparently the cause for William Smith, 73, committing suicide by hanging in the shack at 514 B street where he made his home. The body was discovered at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon by a passerby who notified the sheriff's office and police. Smith had not been seen since Thursday morning and Sheriff Harry Dent said he was believed to have been dead 24 hours or more when found. Former Contractor. Smith came here 44 years ago and was well known to old-timers. For years he was employed by the late Harry Madgwick, prominent contractor, and later was engaged in the contracting business for himself. He did much construction work for the Madden and Thiessen interests in early days. The body was taken to the Brower-Wann funeral home. Sheriff Dent said it was a plain case of suicide and that no inquest would be held. Smith had no known relatives. |
