Lewiston Morning Tribune Tuesday, August 6, 1940 [Part of article] Boat Ride Ends In Death To Boy Thomas Smith, 16, Loses Life In Snake River At 4:30 Yesterday Afternoon Thomas Smith, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Smith, Lewiston Orchards, lost his life yesterday afternoon when a rowboat in which he and four other boys were shooting rapids' capsized in the Snake river approximately one and a half miles south of Lewiston and Clarkston beaches. Although volunteers dragged the river for several hours no trace of the body had been found when they were compelled by darkness to halt the search. The accident occurred at about 4:30 when Smith and four comrades attempted to take the boat through Chick rapids. The group was comprised of Smith, Donald Dickson, 16; Stanley Kirka, 15, reported as owner of the boat, Ivan Brown, 16, and Ted Flickinger, 15.
Lewiston Morning Tribune Fliers Discover Body In River Remains of Thomas Smith Recovered Near Silcott At 10:30 A.M. Yesterday An airplane instructor and his passenger-student yesterday morning brought an end to almost three days of searching for the body of Thomas S. Smith, 16, who drowned Monday evening when thrown from a rowboat with four young companions... Thomas S. Smith was born at Potlatch, Idaho, Oct. 1, 1923, and had lived at Lewiston Orchards with his parents for the last seven years. He completed his first year at senior high school in May. Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter W. Smith, a sister, Bonny Smith, two brothers, Cecil and Donald Smith, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Smith, Potlatch, and Mrs. F. W. Maline [Milne], Garfield. |
