Lewiston Morning Tribune Monday, November 13, 1922 Mrs. Ely Smith Funeral Today Skull Fractured in Runaway, Died Yesterday. The funeral of Mrs. Ely Smith of Bartlett, Ore., who died at White's hospital yesterday morning from injuries received in a runaway last Tuesday, will be held at the Vassar chapel this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, ranchers of the Grand Ronde, were driving in a buggy from their home to Troy, Ore., to vote, when while descending a grade, their check line caught in a ring and the team became unmanageable with the result that the buggy was overturned. Mrs. Smith suffered a fracture at the base of her skull and never regained consciousness. Mr. Smith was only slightly injured. Mrs. Smith, who was formerly Mrs. Matheny, is the mother of Mrs. Frank Johnson of this city, and a son is employed by the Star Dray Co. They with a brother, Richard Kirk, a policeman of Spokane, and Mr. Smith will be in attendance upon the funeral. Jake Smith, a stepson, is in the mountains hunting and could not be reached.
