Death Of Mr. Shupert

Highly Esteemed Lewiston Citizen Passed Away Yesterday Morning Following Long Illness.

Henry L. Shupert, general foreman of the Camas Prairie railroad shops in Lewiston for the past 16 years, passed away at his residence at 1602 G street yesterday morning at 6:30 o'clock. Mr. Shupert's demise was not unexpected by his family and his close friends, as he had been afflicted with an incurable disease for the past year. He spent several months in the Northern Pacific hospital at St. Paul in an effort to find relief, but he gradually grew worse and returned to Lewiston a few weeks ago.

Mr. Shupert had a notable record in the railway service, having up to about a year ago when ill health demanded his retirement, served 34? years, all of which was with the Northern Pacific except the last 16 years in Lewiston. Mr. Shupert first went to work with the Northern Pacific in 1890 in Sprague, Wash., removing from his old home in Indiana to take the position. He followed shop and mechanical work and was soon promoted to positions of responsibility. After eight years' service at Sprague, he became a master mechanic and was sent to Spokane in 1898 to become general foreman of the Northern Pacific shops, a position he held until he was transferred to Lewiston in 1908.

Mr. Shupert was a much esteemed member of the Mason orders, being a member of the Blue lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Shrine. He was also a member of the Ancient Order of United Workmen, and of the General Supervisors. He was a man of sterling worth and character, a workman of exceptional ability and an efficient and kindly executive. His fellow workers in the railway service as well as his brother Masons and his many friends, will be grieved to learn of his death.

Mr. Shupert was 70 years of age Sept. 27, having been born in Elkhart, Ind. On Christmas day 48 years ago he was married to Anna May Culp, and his death cut short by a year and a half his golden wedding anniversary. To this union were born four children, two of whom died in early childhood. His son, Fred, died seven years ago and a daughter, Gertrude, with his widow, survives him. Mr. Shupert is also survived by four brothers and a sister, all of whom reside in the east.

The funeral has been set for Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Vassar chapel. The local Masonic order will have charge of the services.
