Lewiston Morning Tribune Monday, July 25, 1938 Mrs. Mary C. Shafer Is Called By Death Mrs. Mary C. Shafer, 86, a resident of this community since 1898, died at the home of her son, W. Porter Shafer, 409 Thirteenth street, yesterday afternoon at 5 after an illness of two months. Death was caused by hardening of the arteries. A native of Philippi, W. Va., born Feb. 9, 1852, where she married J. R. Shafer, she came west in 1898 with her husband and children, and located at Lewiston. Mr. Shafer, who died July 25, 1918, for several years owned the Central ferry, serving Clearwater river traffic near the site of the sawmill of Potlatch Forests, Inc. Until recent years she was active in church and social work of this city. She was a life long member of the Presbyterian church. Survivors include two sons and two daughters, W. Porter Shafer, Lewiston, W. P. Shafer, Kellogg; Mrs. Daisy Montgomery, Vancouver, Wash., and Mrs. John Shafer, Genesee; one brother and two sisters, William Ridgway, Mrs. Belle Ice and Mrs. Elizabeth Gaynor, all of West Virginia. Funeral services will be held tomorrow morning at 9:30 from the Brower-Wann chapel, the Rev. Dr. L. C. McEwen officiating. Interment will be at Normal Hill cemetery. |
