Lewiston Morning Tribune December 21, 1899 Death Of Joseph Richards He Passed Away Last Evening - Was an Idaho Pioneer. Joseph Richards, an Idaho pioneer, died last evening the result of a paralytic stroke. He was afflicted Tuesday and rapidly failed until the end came. The deceased has resided in Idaho since the early '60s and of late years has lived in Lewiston. He was employed for a long period of time in the Hotel de France in this city and he enjoyed an extensive acquaintance. He was familiarly known as "Grouse Creek Joe." At one time he owned a farm on Craig mountain and during the days of the early excitements was engaged in mining in Idaho county. The deceased was a native of France and came to America when he was a small boy. He served with the Keokuk, Iowa, regiment through the civil war and was a member of the G. A. R. After being afflicted and confined to his bed Tuesday he realized that he would soon be called away. His last worlds were "I have seen plenty and I want to go." No definite arrangements for the funeral were made last night. A brother, Gus Richards, who is a guard at the United States treasury, survived him. He leaves some property interests in Lewiston. |
