L. W. Pickering Taken By Death

L. W. Pickering, 64, of 1144 11th Ave., Lewiston resident for 45 years, died at 9:30 a.m. yesterday at St. Joseph's Hospital of a heart ailment.

He was born Feb. 15, 1889 at Millville, Ind., and married Grace Anderson at Grant City, Mo., Dec. 27, 1908.

They came to Lewiston in 1909 and he entered the employ of the old Lewiston Grocery Co. A few years later he established a grocery store with his father at 9th and Main Sts., which he later sold after his father's death. The store was replaced by a service station and the store building moved eastward. It is now the Pastime Tavern.

Mr. Pickering became a city policeman and served on the force until about 10 years ago, when he became a merchant policeman.

He was a familiar figure on Main Street at night, carrying a flashlight and trying to door of each business building in turn, making sure it was locked.

He was a member of the Lewiston Elks Lodge.

His wife survives.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home. Burial will be at Normal Hill Cemetery.
