John R. Nelson Dead

Pioneer Farmer of the Tammany Section Passed Away Yesterday - Established His Home There in 1880; Survived by Large Family.

John R. Nelson, highly respected pioneer of the Lewiston country, died at 6:30 o'clock yesterday morning at the family home in Tammany Hollow, where he had resided for over 30 years. The death of Mr. Nelson was not entirely unexpected by relatives, for he had been in failing health for several years, being afflicted with a kidney ailment. However, he remained cheerful and confident almost to the last and but a few days ago made a trip to Lewiston.

Mr. Nelson was born October 30, 1841, in Adams county, Illinois. In the year 1862 he crossed the plains and at that time visited Lewiston, but returned to the middle west in 1863. From Illinois he moved to Iowa and in 1876 came to California, proceeding thence to the Walla Walla country where he located a homestead and timber claim. In 1880 he came to Lewiston and in the same year located the farm in Tammany which has since been his home.

Mr. Nelson was of that sturdy type that did not fear the hardships of establishing civilization in a new country and he was content to do his part of good citizen in laying foundations for the later developments that have made this one of the most prosperous of western communities. Throughout his lifetime he maintained a reputation for the strictest integrity and he leaves behind him only friends, who will deeply sympathize with the family in their great loss.

Mr. Nelson is survived by his wife and by 10 children of a former marriage. The children are Commodore Nelson, Mrs. J. W. Whitcomb and Frank Nelson of Lewiston; Horace, and George Arthur Nelson of Tammany; Riley Nelson of Vollmer; Mrs. Mattie McCoy of Kamiah; Joe Nelson of Imperial, California; Ernest Elbert Nelson of Big Sandy, Montana, and J. M. Nelson.

Mr. Nelson was a member of the Christian church and in conformity with his request the funeral services will be conducted at the family home in Tammany, but the interment will be made in the Normal Hill cemetery in Lewiston. The funeral will probably be held tomorrow but later announcement as to the specific date will be made.
