Died Of Poisoning

J. H. Morris Took Dose Of Carbolic Acid

Act Due To Despondency

He Leave Invalid Wife and Two Children - Formerly Resident of Yakima Country.

J. H. Morris, despondent as the result of excessive intoxication, yesterday drank a half ounce of carbolic acid and a few minutes later was dead. He drank the poison in the alley west of the Cash Hardware store and then walked into the U. and I. saloon on Fourth street. He seated himself in a chair and a minute later fell to the floor. Parties in the saloon carried him into a rear room and Dr. Moxley was summoned, but when the physician arrived the unfortunate man was beyond recovery and with a gasp passed away. After taking the poison he spoke to nobody. The vial from which the poison was taken was found later in the alley.

Morris is a married man and leaves an invalid wife and two children, the latter aged six and nine years. Since June last the family have been residing on the Hank Trimble ranch in Tammany Hollow, where Morris was working for Mr. Trimble. On Saturday last Morris came to the city and shortly afterward began drinking. Yesterday morning he informed an acquaintance that he thought he would take a dose of poison. The friend did not receive the remark seriously, but told Morris that the step would be a foolish one, and that as soon as he recovered from the effects of the liquor he would not entertain such a purpose.

On learning that Morris was drinking heavily, Mr. Trimble on Tuesday sent for Mrs. Morris and she arrived here yesterday forenoon. A short time later she was notified of his death.

Morris, who is about thirty-nine years of age, came to this section from Spokane with his family, and prior to his residence at Spokane, lived in the North Yakima country. He has a brother residing at Wenatchee, Wash., and the latter was notified by telegraph of the suicide.

The remains were placed in charge of Coroner Vassar, who, after making an investigation as to the circumstances of the death, decided that it was unnecessary to hold an inquest. The time for the funeral has not yet been fixed, pending advices from the brother of the deceased.
