Joseph McCormick [McCormack] Services, Lapwai

Largest Funeral Cortege In Lapwai History at Rites Of Nez Perce Leader - Grandson of Famed Scout.

Lapwai, July 15 - Funeral services for Joseph McCormick were held here this morning from the Methodist church with the Rev. James Dickson officiant. He was assisted by the Rev. Harry Moffett, Kamiah; the Rev. Daniel Scott, Stites; the Rev. E. J. Connor, Pendleton; the Rev. Stephen Reuben and the Rev. Starr J. Maxwell. The church choir sang five numbers. Seventy-five cars formed the funeral cortege, the largest ever seen here, for the Nez Perce Indian leader.

Mr. McCormick was born in 1872 at Alpowa-wi, Wash. He died at St. Joseph's hospital in Lewiston Saturday after an illness of a little more than a week.

Grandson of Famed Scout.

He was a grandson of Levi McCormick, who was killed in the Nez Perce Indian war while acting as a scout under orders of Gen. O. O. Howard. He was a member of the M. E. church, south, and had served as district steward for the Spokane district for several years. For 25 years he was Sunday school superintendent at the Lapwai mission. He was a leader in temperance work and steward of the Lapwai church.

Surviving him are Harry and Levi McCormick, sons; Lizzie McCormick Lott, Lena McCormick Allen, daughters, and 10 grandchildren.

Active pallbearers were John Rollan, Owen Gould, James McConnville, Camille Broncheau, Phillip Spalding and Charles White, Sr. Honorary pallbearers were Amos Powakee, George Viles, Oslas? Lawrence, John C. Ellenwood, Ben Cloud, John Kane and Josiah Red Wolf.
