Lewiston Morning Tribune Saturday, August 7, 1954 Grace McCarty, Pioneer, Taken Mrs. Grace McCarty, 77, one of Lewiston's oldest pioneers in years of continuous residence, died yesterday at the family home, 0234 24th St. She was born on a homestead near Dayton on July 21, 1877. Her family moved to Lewiston the following year. She had lived here continuously since then. She attended Lewiston public school and Lewiston State Normal School. She was a sister to Sage Akins and John (Cap) Akins. Her first husband, Ralph Baughman, and the Akins brothers were prominent in river transportation here in the early days. She was married to Mr. Baughman here in 1898. He died on Feb. 6. She was married to Leo McCarty here on June 15, 1922. For many years she was active in the Eagles Auxiliary and in the Pythian Sisters. She was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Surviving are her husband, Leo McCarty, former Tenth District judge, Lewiston; a son, Kenneth Baughman, Lewiston; two nieces, Mrs. Andrew Jacobs of Craigmont and Mrs. Walter Emerson of Genesee; and a nephew, John Akins, of Seattle. A son, Glenn [Lynn] Baughman, died in 1918. The body is at Vassar-Rawls Funeral home pending arrangements. |
