Pioneer Resident of Lewiston Was Summoned Yesterday - Came to Idaho as Soldier in 1877 - Enjoyed Active Business Career.

William Havernick, esteemed Lewiston citizen for 23 years, passed away yesterday forenoon at 11:45 o'clock from heart trouble from which he had been a sufferer for the past several months. It had been known for the past several days that Mr. Havernick was very critically ill and, in a measure, his many friends were prepared for the great shock the announcement of his death caused.

Mr. Havernick was born in Moscow, Russia, of German parents, coming to the United States when 14 years of age and locating at Dubuque, Iowa. When a young man he enlisted in the Unites States army and came to Idaho with an infantry detachment under the late Major Kroutinger in the summer of 1877. His company was sent to Camp Howard near Mount Idaho and after serving two years there he was discharged from the service.

Mr. Havernick then commenced his business career in Idaho, first accepting employment with the firm of Vollmer & Scott at Mount Idaho. He later removed to Grangeville where he remained for 14 years and 23 years later removed to Lewiston where the family home has since been. During his residence in Lewiston, Mr. Havernick was district representative for the implement firm of Mitchell, Lewis & Staver and later conducted the White Front stables for a long period. He was later engaged in the fuel business and for a considerable period was in charge of one of the departments of the J. Alexander Co.

Mr. Havernick would have been 66 years of age in July and is survived by his wife, four daughters and two sisters. The daughters are: Miss Edith Havernick, Lewiston; Mrs. Ray Adams, Fairfield; Mrs. W. F. Galbraith and Mrs. T. L. Coultas. The sisters are the Misses Emma and Nataly Havernick of Philadelphia.

During the long period of his residence in Idaho, Mr. Havernick made many friends who learned to love him for his many fine qualities of character. His passing has removed another of the stalwart pioneers who participated in the carving of history in the central Idaho country.

The funeral will be conducted at 2:30 o'clock this afternoon from the Vassar chapel by the Rev. H. A. Vicker of Clarkston.
