Mrs. Phoebe Goldstone

Native of Lewiston Passed to the Great Beyond-Funeral Held Today

The news reached the city last Friday evening from Spokane to the effect that Mrs. Phoebe Goldstone, wife of Samuel Goldstone, the well known Cottonwood merchant, had passed away at St. Lukes hospital where she had been taken for a surgical operation. The news came as a great shock to her many friends in Lewiston. her native city, as well as her many friends in the Camas prairie.

During the past month Mrs. Goldstone had been a sufferer of Graves disease and it was considered necessary to have an operation performed and a couple of week's ago she was taken to Spokane being accompanied by Mr. Goldstone and her son and her sister Miss Anna Binnard. The operation was performed last Thursday morning and every hope had been held out by the physicians that her recovery was assured the operation having been pronounced successful. Friday morning she was still improving but at about 2 o'clock without warning she passed away and death was due directly to heart failure superinduced by the nervous shock from the operation.

Mrs. Goldstone was born in Lewiston March 7, 1871, and lacked four days and one month of being 34 years of age. She was a daughter of Abram Binnard and Rachel Binnard of this city, both deceased. Her childhood days were spent in Lewiston where she finally? grew to womanhood and on April 29, 1890, she was joined in wedlock to Samuel Goldstone. Following their marriage they took up their residence In Cottonwood where Mr. Goldstone conducts a mercantile business and where they have lived ever since. Three children have been born to Mrs. Goldstone, two now being deceased.

Mrs. Goldstone was a woman of exceptional qualities, kind and loving in disposition, she made many warm friends who are grief stricken over her untimely end. As a wife and mother she was devoted and during her life time she was charitable to all with no ill feeling towards anyone which went far to make her life beautiful.

The deceased Is survived by her husband, Samuel Goldstone and her son, Abram Hirsch, also by her brothers, I. M. Binnard of this city and Birka Binnard who is now in Milwaukee and was unable to reach here to attend the funeral, and her sisters, Mrs. Sarah Binnard of Butte, Mrs. Henry Wax of Grangeville, Miss Anna Binnard and Minnie Binnard of this city. The remains were brought to the city Saturday and allowed to remain at rest at the home of I. M. Binnard where many sorrowing friends called to pay their last respects. The funeral will be held from the Binnard residence today at 2 o'clock where a short ceremony will be performed by Rev. J. D. McConkey. Interrment will be made in the family plot in the Lewiston cemetery and the services of the Jewish faith will be performed at the grave. The pall bear ers will be F. W. Kettenbach, M. Berger, D. S. Dent, S. H. Reid. F. D. Culver and W. W. Leeper.

Mrs. Sarah Binnard arrived in the city last evening from Butte and Mr. Henry Wax of Grangeville arrived here yesterday morning. Mrs. Wax is ill and unable to attend.
