Lewiston Morning Tribune Monday, February 24, 1908 John Giffin [Giffen] Dead Was Veteran of the Mexican and the Civil Wars. John Giffin, a highly esteemed resident of Lewiston, died at 8 o'clock yesterday morning in the eastern section of the city. Death was due to a form of pneumonia, after being confined to his bed but a few days. He is survived by his wife and daughters, Mrs. Geo. White and Mrs. Wes Acres. The deceased was born in New York City June 18, 1830. He was a veteran of the Mexican war and was drum major with the 18th new York infantry in the civil war, serving from May 17, 1861, to May 28, 1863. Mr. Giffin has been a resident of this section of the west for over 30 years. Two years ago he and his esteemed wife celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage. The funeral will occur at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon from the family residence and will be under the auspices of the G. A. R. Post. |
