Newton Mattoon Dead; Claimed to be 102

Newton Thomas Mattoon, who relatives claim reached the age of 102 years, died Saturday at the state hospital north at Orofino. Before entering the institution he resided at the home of his son, George Mattoon, Lewiston Orchards.

According to members of the family, Mr. Mattoon was born Sept. 14, 1840, at Oregon City, Ore., and came to Idaho 85 years ago. They said he drove stage between Boise and Silver City in the heyday of mining and from Boise to the old town of Delmer. He led an eventful life in Idaho during territorial days, following mining, and later farming in the Sweetwater area. He had resided in the Orchards about nine years.

Surviving are two daughters and four sons, Mrs. Grace Ferguson, Bend, Ore.; Mrs. Maude Barton, Sunnyside, Wash.; George Mattoon, Orchards; William Mattoon, Kendrick; Carl Mattoon, Bend, and Perry Mattoon, Kendrick.

The body is at the Brower-Wann chapel with funeral arrangements pending.
